Louis (Luser Dov) Shulman, of Hamilton, NJ passed away on Wednesday, July 13th, 2021, at the age of 93. After a short illness, Louis died peacefully with his beloved wife of 71 years, Rochelle and their children & grandchildren by his side.

Louis was born in Poland on November 25th, 1927, to father Abraham and mother Hinda. Louis didn’t have the opportunity for much formal education but spoke several languages and accomplished his high school GED. He was a skilled tailor and eventually owned his own dry cleaning store in Lakewood, NJ where he worked alongside his wife for many years before transferring ownership to his son in 1983. His work ethic and love of family were a model to all who knew and loved him.

As a child of the Holocaust, Louis witnessed many atrocities at the hands of the invading German Army. After years of fleeing capture, Louis was finally sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1944. At war’s end Louis made his way to NY where he was reunited with his father Abraham and his sister Zophia. In 1948, Louis met and married the love of his life, Rochelle, in New York City where he lived and worked for many years before eventually moving to NJ.

Louis was preceded in death by his mother Hinda Necha and his sister, Libe Rifka who both died during the war, and his son Cary Mitchell who passed in 2007 at the age of 52. He is survived by his wife Rochelle Sklarsky Shulman, children Norman Henry Shulman and his wife Karen, Scott Francis Shulman and his wife Hether, his daughter in law Alessandra, his four grandchildren, Benjamin, Erica, Victoria, and Erin, and his two great grandchildren, Matthew and Audrina. He will be missed by all that new him.

Louis was a voracious reader of the New York Times and would quickly complete the daily puzzle in ink. He loved a good meal and could frequently be spotted at his favorite eatery, Porfirio’s Italian Café in Hamilton where he would relish the opportunity to share stories of the war, soccer, or whatever conversation might be going on. A frequent summer visitor to the family cabin in Palermo, Maine, Louis relished the people, the vibe, and of course, the food.

Funeral services and burial are Friday July 16th at 1:00 pm at the Princeton Memorial Park at 403 Gordon Road, Robbinsville, NJ 08691. People wishing to honor Louis’s memory can make a donation to the National Association of Jewish Child Holocaust Survivors, P.O. box 670125, Station C, Main Street, Flushing NY 11367.
