Dr. Arthur B Sherbin of West Windsor, New Jersey passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2020 at the age of 90.

Born in the Bronx, New York in June 1929, he was the son of Joseph and Gertrude (Goshes) Sherbin and brother of the late Shirley Sherbin Sussman.  Arthur was a quiet, serious boy who loved to play the violin.  There was never any grade below an A on his report card.  If the assignment was to do all the odd numbers, he’d do the even ones, too, on his own.  He typically had just one close friend at a time until he was moved into other classes or schools, and lacking the technology to keep in touch, he always made just one more good friend.  Had no interest in sports, even though he lived only walking distance from Yankee Stadium.  He was a great walker, saving the subway fare whenever he could.  He even walked all the way into upper Manhattan on Tuesday evenings to watch Milton Berle on his friend’s tv.

Arthur attended Long Island University, graduated in three years, and went on to earn a master’s in biochemistry from New York University.  He then spent several years at Sloan Kettering performing cancer research before attending medical school at the University of Louisville, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.  He went on to train at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and both Kingsbridge VA Hospital and Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, New York.

Dr. Sherbin practiced general internal medicine from 1960 until his retirement in 2000.  He was on the staff of Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center and St. Peters Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey.  He also served as Medical Director of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the school doctor for 35 years in North Brunswick Township and the Middlesex County Vocational/Technical High Schools.  In addition, Dr. Sherbin maintained a private family practice from his home in Highland Park, New Jersey.

Arthur was a devoted husband to his wife Carolyn for close to 60 years.  During all that time, they practically never left each other’s side. Throughout his retirement, Arthur enjoyed gardening, staying current on new developments in medicine, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.  He was also a proud and active associate member of the Village Grande Chapter of Hadassah, where he was awarded “Husband of the Year” several years ago.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sherbin, his daughter, Rhonda Sherbin, his son, Joseph Sherbin, his daughter, Cynthia Chait and husband David Chait, and his two grandchildren, Joshua and Kayla Chait.

Private funeral services and burial will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at 10 am at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ.  The family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Hadassah and sent to Village Grande Chapter treasurer Helaine Tootleman at 41 Honeyflower Lane, West Windsor, NJ 08550.
