John “Jack” Schirmer

1947 – 2022

John “Jack” Martin Schirmer passed away on March 4, 2022 at the age of 75.

Jack grew up in cold and snowy upstate New York, where he claims to have walked ten miles in the snow to school in winter.   He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from University at Buffalo, State University of New York, where he met his partner and wife of 50 years, Barbara.  They raised a daughter and son, Alison Lockman and Todd Schirmer.

Jack worked in the paper industry for most of his life, starting in the lab and moving into management and eventually consulting.  His work in the paper industry took him to many forested places, including Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Wisconsin, Oregon, Ohio, and Michigan, before he retired to New Jersey.

Jack loved to read everything from spy novels to nature books to business tomes, and enjoyed being outside in the garden with his hands in the dirt, trying to solve a mole problem, or just troubleshooting a pesky sprinkler.  He enjoyed watching birds near his home and constantly experimented with the recipe for hummingbird food.  He also enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen, where he was a master with chili and always perfecting his Chex Mix..  He was a thoughtful companion, asked great questions, and supported (and motivated!) his family in their passions.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents Marian and Walter Schirmer, and is survived by wife Barbara, children Alison and Todd, son-in-law Jeffrey Lockman, grandchildren Margaret, Sam, and Annie, sisters Jill Brown, Jane Schirmer, and Jodi Schuttler, and several nieces and nephews.
