Harriet Meisner Levine, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on November 7, 2019 at Meadow Lakes in Hightstown, NJ.

Mrs. Levine was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Emanuel Levine. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Mae Ann and Mark Smith, Robert Walter Levine and Hannah Blessing, and Gary Michael and Debbie Levine. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Carl Benjamin Smith, Matthew Emanuel Levine, and Lisa Alexandra Levine, as well as Rebecca Blessing, Chloe Blessing Walton, Chris Walton, and Pierson Walton.

Born on December 27, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Jack Meisner and Mae Rubinowitz Meisner, she grew up in Jersey City, NJ. She married Dr. Emanuel Levine in Trenton, NJ in 1952. While raising their three children in Lawrenceville, NJ, she attended night school at Rider College and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1974.

Mrs. Levine served as a teacher of English as a Second Language with the Trenton Board of Education for many years. After retiring, Mrs. Levine remained a fixture in her local community. She was a board member of the Lawrence Township Senior Executive Council, the Lawrence Township Friends of the Library, and the Lawrence Arts Council.

A prolific writer and talented storyteller, she published many pieces in Story Art Magazine, was a Charter Member of the Garden State Storytellers’ League, and served as the first Vice President of Finance for the National Story League.

Mrs. Levine was also dedicated to continuing her late husband’s academic legacy. She served as Vice President of the Rider University Retirees Association. In 1992, she established the Dr. Emanuel Levine Memorial Fund to award prizes for scholarship in history and research, and launched the Dr. Emanuel Levine Lecture Series in the Rider University History Department.

Funeral services are 10 am Sunday, November 10 at Adath Israel Congregation, 1958 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ. Burial will follow at Ewing Cemetery, 78 Scotch Road, Ewing, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, the family of Mrs. Levine suggests that donations be made to the Dr. Emanuel Levine and Harriet Levine Memorial Scholarship at Rider University, which she established in 1998 for students pursuing education and history.
