Arthur H. Coughlin
1949 – 2024
Arthur H. Coughlin, of Ewing, NJ unexpectedly passed away on April 28, 2024 at the age of 74.
Art was a New Jerseyan through and through, having been born in Rahway, grown up in Middletown, and spent most of his life in Ewing. He received a teaching degree and a BA in secondary mathematics from the New Jersey State Teachers College at Glassboro and after spending a year teaching high school math in Camden, Art found his true calling in the world of computers. He started with Mathematica before moving on to the New Jersey Department of Transportation where he worked until his retirement. He never really stopped being a computer expert, however, serving as IT support for his sisters and their families, patiently fixing user errors from the Carolinas to Upstate New York and asking only a holiday meal in return. Needless to say, heaven’s tech support has received a serious upgrade.
A long-haired, bearded man with a fierce independent streak, Art remained a kid at heart. He loved the outdoors and could often be seen around town on his bicycle or hiking the Delaware Water Gap. He delighted in playing with his nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and -nephews, often conspiring with them against their parents. He reveled in a decade-long game of tag that crossed state borders and, as he would tell it, featured several innovative new tactics and strategies. The winner is still under review.
Art was preceded in death by his mother Phyllis F. Coughlin (nee Borer), father Arthur P. Coughlin, and brother-in-law Bill Baker. He is survived by his sisters Pat Baker and Phyllis (Bill) Duncan; nieces and nephews Erin Baker, Brent (Wynnie) Baker, Matt (Jessica) Duncan, Eric Duncan, and Michaela (Henry) Raach; and grand-nieces and -nephews Zoe, Myles, Fiona, and Ewan.
Interment was private. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
