YARDLEY, PA… Herbert Louis Levin, 95, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018 at his home.
Herbert Louis Levin was born on June 8, 1923 in Reading, PA, the son of Joseph and Jean (Blecker) Levin. During his youth he always showed creativity and a keen interest in mechanical design. As a child he built model airplanes; in adolescence he made a canoe from scratch; and in adulthood he enjoyed spending free time in his workshop, which was filled with a great range of woodworking and metalwork tools. He was proud of his United States military service in the Second World War, and was an expert marksman; he was selected for the Army Specialized Training Program, sent to Lafayette College to study engineering, and then stationed in the Pacific theater.
Following his military service, he returned to Lafayette College and graduated with honors (B.S., 1948). He was a member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, the Hillel Society, and the Fencing Club, and he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honors society. He attended the Graduate School of Engineering at Columbia University and received his Masters degree in engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Herbert resided in Paterson, NJ and Wyckoff, NJ before settling in Yardley, PA in 1980. His career as a mechanical and electronics engineer in the field of telecommunications started at ATT and continued in the early 1950s at Bells Labs in New York City; he then worked at the ITT Corporation, RCA, and General Electric. During these years he was awarded numerous patents for inventions that include the traveling wave tube, the electron gun, and the antenna de-icing device. One of the highlights of his career was when he was invited, along with his wife Charlotte, to attend a satellite launch at Cape Canaveral. At his retirement from GE in 1999, where he specialized in satellite communication, he was “gratefully honored for outstanding contributions during a career of faithful service and dedication.”
Herbert loved photography, painting, and sculpture. His family was the most important thing to him. He and Charlotte were longtime members of Har Sinai Temple, where he served on its Board of Trustees for a number of years. Before moving to Yardley, he was a member of Temple Emanuel in Paterson, NJ (now located in Franklin Lakes).
He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Charlotte (Engel) Levin; a daughter and son-in-law, Phillis Marna Levin and Dr. Jack Stacey Shanewise; a son and daughter-in-law, Philip Engel Levin and Karen Ann Zurlo; a sister, Leatrice (Levin) Braman; and a grandson, Jason Michael Levin.
Funeral services are Thursday, 11 AM, June 14 at Har Sinai Temple, 2421 Pennington Road, Pennington, NJ. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Saddle Brook, NJ. The period of mourning will be observed Thursday, June 14 at 6 PM at the home of Charlotte Levin in Yardley, PA.
