EWING… Mary R. Sgroi, 94, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, January 17, 2019 surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Sgroi was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey and resided in East Brunswick and Milltown for over fifty years.
She shared 70 years of marriage with her beloved husband, the late Joseph A. Sgroi, Sr. She is survived by the family who was always at the center of her life and to whom she gave so much: daughter Angela Sgroi, her two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Catherine Sgroi, Anthony and Mariann Sgroi, grandchildren Cameron Sgroi, Jes and Brittney Sgroi, Joseph D. Sgroi, Megan Sgroi, Anthony J. Sgroi, and two great grandchildren Hudson and Mac Sgroi. She is also survived by her sister Grace Olcsvay as well as her many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families who were each so dear to her.
Mrs. Sgroi was a warm, generous person whose loving spirit seemed to bring happiness and comfort to the people who were a regular part of her life, as well as to all the others she met throughout her life. After her years of raising her children, she worked and retired from Johnson & Johnson of New Brunswick. She enjoyed a long, active retirement through her involvement in the Senior Centers both in Milltown, NJ and, in the last few years of her life, in Ewing, NJ. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Milltown for many years and, with her husband, traveled extensively, danced regularly (especially with Polka social dance groups throughout the area), and she created knitted, crocheted and other types of needlework for almost everyone she knew.
Funeral services are Tuesday 9am, January 22 at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, 1534 Pennington Road, Ewing Township, with Mass of the Christian Burial celebrated 10am at Incarnation-St. James Church, 1545 Pennington Road, Ewing Township. Entombment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick. Calling hours are Monday, January 21 from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm at the memorial chapel.
When I think of my Aunt Mary, I think of wonderful days gone by of family get togethers. All the Sgroi
clan at Uncle Joe & Aunt Mary’s home in E. Brunswick. Aunt Mary would always greet you & make you
feel special. She was a beautiful person. You just felt good being with her. She had a great sense of
humor & would easily laugh with you. I remember during visits there would always be a dinner ahead.
The ladies would all be talking at the same time & a dinner fit for a king was appreciated.
Kathy & I were so fortunate to be in Florida visiting my parents while Uncle Joe & Aunt Mary were vacationing also. Spending that time with them was a very special time in my life. We miss you & love you Aunt Mary. Tell Uncle Joe Hi!
