YARDLEY, PA… Joyce Colbert passed away on Thursday February 2nd, 2017, surrounded by her family. She was a teacher of young children and taught for 4 years in New York City, 4 years in Midland Park, New Jersey and 20 years in Livingston, New Jersey.
Joyce received her BA from Brooklyn College and her MA from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. During her teaching career she pursued courses in helping atypical children.
Born and raised in New York City she lived in Fair Lawn, New Jersey for 11 years before moving to Livingston, New Jersey in 1966. While living in Fair Lawn she was actively involved in NCJW.
After retiring from the Livingston School System, Mrs. Colbert volunteered at the Irvington Public Library conducting literacy testing. For 8 years she tutored English As A Second Language at the Livingston Public Library and was a passionate volunteer at their annual book sale benefitting the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was a Listener for the Mental Health Association and delivered Meals on Wheels. In addition she was Treasurer of West Essex Chapter of American Jewish Congress for many years. She also was a long-time volunteer poll worker in Livingston.
Joyce was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Aaron. She is survived by Kenneth and Myra Colbert of Newtown, Pennsylvania and Andrew and Juliana Colbert of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by her three grandchildren Meg, David, and Savannah and great grandson, Ezra.
Funeral services and burial were held on Friday February 3, 2017 at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, NJ.
