John C. Hutchinson, Jr., of Ewing, passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at the age of 90.
John was born in New Brunswick, NJ to John C. Hutchinson, Sr. and Hazel Barker Hutchinson. He was a 1949 graduate of Trenton High School where he was a three sport athlete. On April 19, 1952 John married Helen (Schindler) Hutchinson. He knew from the moment they met they would spend their lives together. The couple raised two daughters and four sons. They’ve resided in Ewing since 1955.
John was a veteran of the United States Navy. After serving his country, he went on to serve his community for 33 years as a Ewing Township police officer. He received his certification as an Accident Reconstructionist from Northwestern University and was named Ewing Township Police Officer of the Year in 1985. John served as a past President of the Ewing Police Benevolent Association. He was also a founding member of the Fraternal Order of Police Ewing Lodge No. 083, the Ewing Patriotic Committee, a member of the VFW and a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus in Ewing Township. He retired in 1992 with the rank of Sergeant.
Sgt. Hutchinson was a talented photographer – a passion he only found in retirement. As a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography, John turned a hobby into a second career. He had a knack for capturing life’s moments – from a bride and groom’s first kiss and family portraits in front of the Christmas tree to his trips around the world. He and Helen traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Southeast Asia, taking photos to document their adventures.
John also enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, watching football and spending time with his family. He was affectionately known as “Peepop” to his 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
John was predeceased by his parents, John C. Hutchinson, Sr. and Hazel Hutchinson, his sister, Gloria Keating, his daughter, Mary Ellen Hutchinson and his niece Maureen Keating. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Hutchinson, his children, John C. Hutchinson, III, Carolyn Reading (Michael), Christopher Hutchinson (Adriene Presti), Robert Hutchinson, James Hutchinson (Jacqueline), his grandchildren, Lauren Kwiatkowski, Ashley Hutchinson, Keary Kwiatkowski, Robert Kwiatkowski (Lyndsay Woodward), Jennifer Costa (Paulo), Gregory Kwiatkowski (Magda Ruiz‘Soto), Stephanie Hutchinson, Christina Frazer (Jefferson), Raechel Hutchinson (Tanner Loggins), Annabel Hutchinson, Henry Hutchinson, his great grandchildren, Noah, Raegan, Jada, Mason, Olivia, Ella, Isabelle, Preston, Oliver, Anthony, a daughter-in-law Beth Hutchinson, several nieces and nephews and special friends Eileen Masterson and the guys from the coffee club.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family mass will be held at the Church of Saint Ann. A funeral service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital ( 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105) or the Church of Saint Ann (1253 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648).
What a wonderful life to be proud of. Our deepest condolences and love to the family. Praying for all of you. The Treanor Family
I met John and Helen after one of Henry’s travel baseball games many years ago. I remember thinking how sweet they were and how obvious it was they were proud of their grandson. As a coach it was one of those moments you don’t forget. I had the incredibly good fortune to coach that team with John and Helen’s son (Henry’s dad) Jim. Since then Jim has become one of my closest friends. My family and I were deeply saddened to learn of John’s passing. Our heart-felt condolences to Jim, Jackie, Annabelle, Henry, and the rest of the Hutchinson family. With a life well lived it’s easy to see how much he will be missed…
What an excellent legacy. We send our love and comfort to your precious family. The Sanchez Family.
Hutch was my Dad’s best friend. They were like brothers. They knew each other so well because they were spun from the same cloth. God, family, and friends were their treasures. They were men we respected and loved. I, also, considered Hutch a true and cherished friend. God blessed this world with Hutch and I thank Him for this gift.
Mr Hutchinson…or Hutch. What a wonderful man. I remember your collection of fish and seeing you at the Ewing High sporting events in your uniform always with a serious smile. I remember you had a spot at the dinner table and Mrs. Hutchinson would cook and I was invited for dinner. I’ll miss growing up with your family Jimmy Robert Chris Jack and your lovely daughters and I’ll miss you too Mr Hutchinson I’ll see you again. …
Hutch always took my daughters Amy Beth Varga pictures form Innovative dance . He took beautiful shots. I worked with Helen for many years @ Princeton pike internal med . I know her heart is broken. Hutch and Helen are Ewing Icons!
Mr. Hutchison was a pioneer in Ewing. The Ewing police were lucky to have him as part of their team for so long. He and Helen raised a model family. He will be greatly missed by all. My condolences to the family. Please take comfort in the fact we will all meet again. Keep the light on John.
Through the years, “Hutch” served his country as well as community. Our coffee club get- togethers were always spirited, opinionated meetings; ending with “Hutch” saying, “Who cares?” May God
bless. Well done, sailor.

Dear Hutchinsons,
Hi, it’s Michael Slack. It’s been so long that I hope you still remember who I am.
I don’t have too many connections to Ewing anymore, so the news of Hutch’s passing has just reached my planet. Seems like centuries ago that I knew the Hutchinson family well. Good memories of camping at Pine Haven, the beach at Sea Isle, Fish & Pets, and so much more. I learned alot from Hutch, and got to spend a good amount of time with him. In later years, when we were both photographers, we used to cross paths at the photo lab or camera shop. He was always so generous with his time and knowledge.
Ninety years is a good, long life, especially when you consider all the people that he affected positvely in that time. Of course, you have to say the same about Helen, too (SmoochSmooch).
My sincere condolences to the whole Hutchinson clan for your loss, MICHAEL
Dear Helen and Family….
