Helen Gasner passed away peacefully on September 8, 2020 at home in Ewing, NJ.
She was born March 27, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. Her parents, Michael and Goldie (Harbus) Halpern, predeceased her, as did her husband and her brothers Nathan and Saul.
Helen graduated from Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn in 1946 and married Sidney Gasner in 1947. She and Sid settled in Clearview Gardens, Whitestone, Queens, where she raised three children before becoming a dedicated volunteer at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital. Sid died in 1994.
Helen was an active member of the Clearview Assistance Program (CAP) organization, participating in programs and doing volunteer work under its auspices until her move to NJ in 2012.
Throughout her life Helen developed and maintained a group of close friends, some dating back to her high school days. Though reserved, she was known for her kindness and consideration of those around her. This was especially true in recent years, when she battled Parkinson’s and a number of other physical problems. Despite numerous hospitalizations she retained her graciousness, dignity, and sense of humor. We will miss her.
Helen is survived by her son Morton Gasner and his wife Debra Kanter, son Steven Gasner, daughter Mindy Dubs, granddaughter Rena Krauser and her husband Dan, and great-grandson Asher Krauser, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Private funeral services and burial are Thursday, September 10 at New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, NY.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at the Abrams Residence, Greenwood House, and Greenwood House HomeCare and Hospice for the loving care they provided Helen before and during her final illness. The family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to Greenwood House, 50 Walter Street, Ewing, NJ 08628.
Loved her
Mort and Debbie, I’m sorry for your loss. I’m sure you’re remembering all of the good times and places you’ve been with Helen. Thinking of you with love.
We are so sorry for your loss. She had a very devoted son and daughter-in-law who cared and supported her to the end.
Before the virus I volunteered at Abrams and led an exercise class weekly. Your mother would come occasionally and I enjoyed seeing her when she came.
