Elizabeth Belson was as fearless as she was kind-hearted, as adventurous as she was rooted, as strong as she was empathetic and loving. She was all of these things and more with her family and many friends from all walks of life who basked in her energy, humor and warmth.
She loved a good party, traveling, her many plants and gathering around food — any occasion to have a good time, indoors or outside and in any season, as long as people came prepared for hugs and jokes and good conversation. Her instant and infectious charm made sure of that.
Her long battle with cancer, which ultimately consumed her on Friday, Sept. 10, never diminished her will and heart. Until the end, she continued to listen, love, laugh and share her wonder in life’s miracles, big and small.
She will be sorely missed by her husband Sandy, her mother, Gladys, her brothers Jeff and Ken, and their families.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, September 13 at 11:00 am at Mount Carmel Cemetery – Knollwood Park, (Section 5) 57-80 Cooper Avenue, Ridgewood, New York.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Jeffrey Belson (contact family for address) on Monday from 1pm – 8pm and Tuesday from 3pm – 7pm. Please wear a mask if you are not vaccinated. Please contact the family for more information.

Miz Liz, when did we first meet? Perhaps in 1990. “Seymour, get me something sweet.” I will always laugh at this line as I try to imitate your perfect delivery of it. Your humor and humanity were intertwined in your soul. Peace, my funny, fun-loving friend.

Liz was a graduate of our Penn State Master Gardener Class of ’21. When I was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2021, I reached out to Liz. I suppose it was because I sensed we shared a penchant for humor and a bit of irreverence. Because of COVID, I did not actually lay eyes on Liz until shortly before she passed. But she bridged that gap quite well using technology. At first, she gave me a long list of dos and don’ts regarding the technicalities of cancer. But that quickly morphed to sharing what Liz called “tumor humor.” There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Liz was instrumental to my coming to grips with cancer.
Because of the location of my cancer and our mutual love of things New York, including Seinfeld, I became the “Assman.” We had a few laughs out of that moniker. And, by the way, courtesy of Liz I have the tee-shirt to prove it.
One of the things she shared with me was an interview she had with The NY Times a few years back. She described losing one of her cancer mentors as “…it was like someone rolled over my heart with a steam roller.” Now I know exactly what she meant.

I’m so lucky that I got the chance to meet Liz in our Master Gardener class. She was such an interesting person, and she has certainly left an impression. Wishing much peace to her family. ❤️
This is another Master Gardener friend of Liz’s. Because of Covid, we never met in person so it is a testament to her intelligence, humor, and creativity that she left such a wonderful impression on me. She was a great communicator and writer and I appreciated that Liz made it to ever zoom call that she could. I’m going to miss her. To her family and many friends, I’m sure there’s been many tears but I hope you will someday look at a beautiful garden or the blue-blue sky of September and have fun memories of Liz.
I was in Master Gardener class with Liz, and I instantly felt connected as a former NYer. We met at the gardens, and I was so amazed to see her and her beautiful heart in person. We had such a great conversation I’ll always treasure. And I will never see Hello Kitty again without instantly connecting her to Liz. My heart goes out to her family, you’re all in my prayers.
My sincere thoughts/prayers are with the Belson family. I had the pleasure of working with Liz. I may have never met her, but truly respected her and she will be missed.
Liz loved sharing her passion for plants and horticulture, and to fulfill a personal dream, Liz applied to the Penn State Master Gardener volunteer program in Bucks County. We were thrilled to accept Liz into the program, and we loved getting to know her during our virtual basic training course from Oct 2020 – March 2021. (One of the blessings of being in lockdown was having so much quality online time together.) Liz’s professional communication skills helped our program deliver quality education support to the Adams Hollow Community Garden in Bristol, PA. We couldn’t have done it without her. Liz became a Certified Master Gardener in 2021, having provided over 50 hours of volunteer time during her first year of service – and she accomplished this goal during months of cancer treatments. Liz will forever be an inspiration to me, and to the Penn State Master Gardeners of Bucks County.
