Dorothy Friedman

Dorothy Friedman, of Pennington, New Jersey, passed away on Sunday June 16, 2024 at the age of 93.
Born in The Bronx on January 1, 1931, she was New York City’s first baby of the year.  She was a proud first generation American, the daughter of hard working immigrant parents, Benjamin and Sarah Uslip.
She attended William Howard Taft High School in The Bronx, and The City College of New York, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business.  She then went on to William Paterson University (formerly Paterson State College) to obtain her teaching certificate, and to Montclair State University, where she earned her Master’s Degree.
She started her career working in New York’s Jewelry Exchange and then went on to buying positions at The De Pinna Company and Jay Thorpe Department Stores in New York, and held a Manager’s Position at Sterns Department Store some years later.
Dorothy was a devoted teacher.  She taught Business Education to High School Seniors at Westwood Regional High School for many years, where she also ran the school’s DECA club.  She worked tirelessly helping her students fundraise, allowing them to travel with her to various DECA conventions nationwide, where her students often were victorious in competition.  Her students were dear to her and she spent countless hours  locating jobs and identifying career paths for them.  Dorothy also spent evenings teaching as adjunct faculty at Caldwell University and Bergen Community College.
Most importantly, Dorothy was a true matriarch.  She built a vacation home in the Poconos, fondly dubbed “The Cuckoo House,” where she and her husband Sy would enjoy spending weekends, school vacations and family gatherings.  She also enjoyed painting, and was actively involved in various art shows in Mercer County, where she won various awards of recognition.  She was also an avid reader and enjoyed playing various games such as Mah-Jongg,  Bridge and Rummikub,  and spent many years teaching Mah-Jongg to others through the local senior center.
She lost her devoted husband, Seymour in November.  She leaves behind her son Martin Friedman (Beth) and daughter Paula Friedman Gross (Jeffrey) and grandchildren Rae (Steve) Pellegrino, Alec and Chance Friedman and Aidan, Shane, and Ethan Gross.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to The American Heart Association.
She will be sorely missed but will always be with us in our hearts.
Funeral services are at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at The Jewish Center, Princeton, New Jersey.  Burial will follow at Beth David Cemetery, Elmont, NY.  The family will observe Shiva on Wednesday and Thursday (June 19 & 20) from 7pm – 9pm with a minyan both evenings at 7:30pm at Dorothy’s Home at 54 Foster Rd.
