David Stern, 85, passed away surrounded by loved ones on September 8, 2023 after a brief illness.

A graduate of James Madison High School, New York University (BA) and Columbia University (MBA), David spent much of his career at McGraw Hill where he focused on builder & architect publications and was known as an energetic and innovative leader.

With a larger than life personality, he is famous for tales of his adventures, especially from his youth in the 1940s and 50s, and for his joy in great movies (Casablanca), classical music (Russian composers), Tootsie Roll Pops, wintergreen candies, cocktail hours (Ketel One) and dramatic weather.  He loved sailing and being on the water, and loved his family most of all.

David is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Patricia Stern, his daughters Jackie (Jeff Potash), Sharon (Dann Brown), Valerie White (Marc Brodeur) and Leslie White, and his grandchildren Nick and Rosie Potash, AJ Brown, and Chloe Brodeur.

Memorial services are Wednesday, September 13 at 10:00 am at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, 1534 Pennington Road, Ewing, NJ. Interment was private.

Shiva will be observed on Wednesday at the Stern residence in Skillman, NJ immediately following the memorial service until 5:00 pm and on Thursday from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Stern & Potash residence in Manhattan.
