Ann Schmalz, 82, of Jackson Township, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019.
Born in Vineland, NJ, she grew up in Highland, NY on the grounds of Friedman’s Hotel – a working farm which later became known as the Rocking Horse Ranch Resort. She had a pet rooster there named Louie.
Ann was a graduate of Cornell University. During her studies she met her husband, Ernest, a veteran of the Korean War attending college on the G.I. Bill. The two lived in Queens, NY, and later moved to Sayreville, NJ to raise their daughters. She had a long career as a registered nurse, working in a pediatric doctor’s office for 30 years, and later as a school nurse at the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Sayreville until her retirement. She later moved to Jackson Township and resided there the past 23 years.
Ann enjoyed collecting pottery, reading, traveling and spending her summers at the pool.
Wife of the late Ernest Schmalz, she is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law: Lois and Jeffrey Miller, Lorraine and Dale McMillen, Eileen and Greg Maisel, a brother: Jules Friedman, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services are 1 pm Wednesday, March 13 at Congregation Beth Chaim, 329 Village Road East, West Windsor, NJ. Burial will follow at Floral Park Cemetery, 104 Deans Rhode Hall Rd, Monmouth Junction, NJ.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Lois and Jeff Miller on Wednesday, immediately following burial, 7-9 pm on Thursday and 4-8 pm on Sunday with minyans every night at 7:30 pm. Memorial contributions are respectfully requested to the American Cancer Society or to Jewish Family & Children’s Service.
